Berry's files for bankruptcy; restaurant will 'continue as normal'

Berry’s Restaurant has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and Monday’s sheriff’s sale is canceled.

However, those legal circumstances don’t have an impact on the downtown eatery now known as 1946 Berry’s Restaurant, owner Lynn Bolden said. The rebranding started about November.

“We are 1946 Berry’s Restaurant,” Bolden said Friday. “We are strong and we’ve had a busy day.”

On Friday, Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway ruled there would be no foreclosure on Berry’s Restaurant while Chapter 11 bankruptcy is pending, according to court records. The bankruptcy case was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

Bolden, who noted she isn’t affiliated with the bankruptcy proceedings, said she assumes “it would be a reorganization” of Berry’s financial issues. She also quickly added that 1946 Berry’s Restaurant will “continue as normal.”

As of late May, Bolden was in the process finalizing the sale of the building property, with several parcels already having been transferred to her name.

“The restaurant has already been purchased. The building is sold separately,” she said in May. “The purchase agreement has been in place since the first of December of 2018.”

The last parcel was listed in a sheriff’s sale scheduled for Monday.

“That has been canceled; that is my understanding,” she said Friday. “Everything on my end is final.”
